About the work

My work from 2008 contuinues to reflect my interest in the idea of painting as an almost sculptural pursuit.

These images are shaped and 'carved' from blocks of densely worked and heavily layered paint. As destructive and brutal as the process can be, this technique ('anti-painting' as I sometimes call it) can produce startlingly subtle and delicate painted surfaces.

The decisions that one must normally agonise over - decisions about colour, composition, form - become a more haphazard part of a process of obscurement, whereby the initial structure of the painting (thickly painted reproductions from street plans and road atlases) are gradually submerged by thick, liquid paint.

The tangled cables and veins that characterize my recent work represent a wild, technicolour, chemical, version of natural forms. The alien landscapes that are revealed by means of these reductive and abrasive techniques are invented vistas of nature and humankind run amok.
