About the work The 'Cable' series from late 2005 has continued into the early part of this year, although the cumulative process that led to the densely textured, sculptural surfaces of the early paintings from this series, has been superseded by a more reductive approach, as was first seen in the 'Spin' series of 2004. The paintings are built up, layer by layer, becoming very heavily worked slabs of textured paint. Both acrylic and oil paint is used, each combined with gels and resins so that the paint becomes translucent. When the surface begins to congeal and when further addition of paint becomes impossible, the painting is 'removed' from the canvas through a process of scraping and sanding, revealing the image in a more subtle and surprising way. As the paint is stripped away, the skeleton of the painting emerges, the network of lines becoming increasingly interwoven and intricate. The textural aspect that has been such an integral part of my work has, for now at least, been replaced by a fascination with the story of the surface and the revelation of the painted strata that make up the history of each piece. Once again, the element of chance has come to play a vital role in the success or failure of each painting, as long-hidden elements of a piece slowly emerge as the layers are stripped away.
