About the work

My paintings from early 2005 (1-6 above) return once more to the use of street plans and to the city as a subject matter, a shift which seemed to follow quite naturally from the corrupted natural forms of the 'KX' series.

Specific sections of London maps have been reproduced here to form the skeleton of these images, which are much harsher in tone than much of my previous work.

Natural forms have been obliterated in these pieces, obscured by dark, hard-edged roads and avenues. The dragged paint in these heavily-textured works give the images a graffiti-like quality. The streets in these anonymous maps seem to glow or bleed.

In the most recent ‘Cable’ series I have continued to use hard-edged, map-like structures as the starting point for each painting, but these are then gradually obscured by a dense web of more organic forms. These images are not pre-conceived but emerge as each layer of paint interacts with previous layers, often in an unpredictable, chemical way over a period of several days.

I am interested in the relationship that we have with our environment, with the means that we use to delineate, enhance or suppress the natural world for our own convenience and consumption, and in the capacity that nature has to shake off our control.
