About the work This series of paintings was influenced by a series of drawings made in Highgate Woods. Whilst working I became fascinated by the branches in the highest reaches of the trees that I was studying and began to focus on abstracting and simplifying small sections. I began manipulating photographs of these details (see below) and, back in the studio, began to refine and adapt the mark-making techniques that I have been developing over the past 12 months to mimic these natural forms and patterns. The representational aspect of these new works should not be seen as the subject matter of the work, but rather as a starting point for a process that, to a certain extent, allows the paintings to make themselves. Although I apply the paint to the surface in a specific and repetitive way, it then follows its own path, growing and changing without my intervention. Gravity, the viscosity of the paint, the texture of the surface, even the temperature in my studio; all these factors play a part. The ‘happy accidents’ that this process encourages makes for a more dynamic relationship with each work, forcing me to adapt as every layer is applied.
