About the work

The 'Spin' series (1-3 above) developed out of the 'Treeline' series, and these paintings were produced in a similar way, by pouring liquid paint onto the canvas and guiding its flow across the surface. Here, however, rather than building the surface layer by layer, I apply the paint, then remove it, scraping and sanding the canvas until the surface is smooth.

The loops and arcs of these paintings are more natural and organic than those of the 'Treeline' series but this is often juxtaposed by the use of vivid colour. I describe these as my archaeological paintings; the painting is revealed in reverse and the history of the image is evident in faint and subtle ways.

Conversely, the 'KX' series (4-6) are dramatically textural, with a heavily worked, built-up surface that echoes the natural forms of the previous two series' but keeps nature at arms length by abstracting these shapes further, straightening and shifting them until they become alien.
