About the work

These paintings (particularly 2,3 and 5) were inspired by photographs of microchips (see below). I was fascinated by the resemblance of these images to satellite photographs of towns and cities and was interested in this paradox of scale.

Whilst at art college the majority of my work was landscape based and I began to return to these themes (although from a different, aerial perspective) in my work during this period.

This representative aspect of my work, however abstract, is only the starting point for these paintings, which take on a life of their own as soon as the first mark is made. With each layer that is applied a decision has to be made about the next. Colour, tone and surface are my key concerns and my work is always an attempt to think several 'moves' ahead in order to keep the painting alive.
