About the work I began using acrylics in 2000 and my work changed considerably. I have always built my images layer by layer, and the fast drying time of acrylic paint enable me to begin to work in a much more intricate and complex way. In these pieces, paint is applied and then partially removed through a controlled process of repeated scraping and dragging. With each layer that is applied traces and lines remain, slowly building a textured surface which, in turn, affects the way in which subsequent applications behave. Paint gathers in the weave of the canvas and around the raised lines of previous layers. Eventually this creates a finished surface which functions as a visually satisfying whole, a surface which can be deconstructed by the viewer (through an understanding of the process) into its component parts - from the first layer to the last.
